Purple Woods Maple Syrup Festival

March 14th, 2012 by My Durham Desktop

Where’s the snow?  This maple syrup season is one of the earliest on record.  When temperatures rise above freezing in the daytime and dips below at night — the sap, she runs.  It’s a rite of spring, for sure.

Purple Woods Maple Syrup Festival that opened on March 10 is one of the earliest, and that should work in their favour given this early season.

Staff and volunteers at the Ganaraska Forest Centre are providing an opportunity to experience such a thrill: a slide show and displays before venturing out on a guided walk in search of an owl or two. Registrants will follow the leader’s acoustic trail of hoots to seek out the popular Snowy Owl, the Great Horned Owl, and many more.   This evening event ends back at the Centre at 9:00 pm where the group will sip hot chocolate and reminisce over the sightings.

Uxbridge Winter Carnival – Feb 18 to 20

February 17th, 2012 by My Durham Desktop

Everything is free at Uxbridge’s annual Family Day weekend celebration. That’s got to be a good thing!  Snow golf, karaoke and cross-country skiing are just a few of the activities that will be offered.  And even if the weather doesn’t cooperate with freezing temperatures, there’ll still be plenty to do;  snow golf without the snow, just gets to be a kind of mini-putt!  The most important thing for the organizers is to provide fun opportunities for families to get outside together in the fresh air.

Necklace by Kimberley Price.  Jewellry making has been a lifelong practice of Kimberley’s.   The majority of her pieces are inspired by the art of other cultures, for example, antique beads from the Turkoman of northern Afghanistan strung with Venetian beads traded into Africa in the late 19th century.

In addition to eclectic pieces of jewellry and work from over 100 other Ontario artists, Meta4 Gallery offers art courses.  They’re booking right now for March Break Art Camp.
