WHITBY

Inside the world of 007

During World War II, there was a secret agent training camp in Whitby called Camp X. The training camp was located on the shore of Lake Ontario, where it could be reached discreetly at night by water from the USA. One of the spy trainees was Bond author Ian Fleming, who went on to create the famous James Bond “007” character using knowledge he acquired here.

Lynn Philip Hodgson’s book “Inside-Camp X” has done much to awaken a lot of interest in this real life spy story, and if you’re lucky, you might catch one of his guided walks around the Camp X site. One opportunity is coming up on May 4 as part of Doors Open Whitby.

Although spring is officially here, the warmer temperatures have not followed suit. But, some people are happy with the cold. Winter sports enthusiasts love it, as do the organizers of the Sunderland Maple Syrup Festival (taking place April 6 and 7) because these unseasonably cold nights have kept the sap dripping.

Apart from a myriad of maple syrup-related activities, such as pancake eating and sugar bush tours, the organizers have added a couple of new features.

On both days, “Hands on Exotics” offers children and families an opportunity to touch, meet and learn about a variety of exotic animals both large and small.

On Sunday there are a number of chances to “Live the History” with presentations of pioneer life by interactive theatrical company, “Blades of Glory.”
