“Hope” by Aynsley Risto.

Why not experience the opening of a new art show in Whitby and let your senses be sizzled by the up and coming “Sulky” band?  Did you even know there’s an art gallery at Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences?

The Gallery has been running since 2008, partnering with local art groups, councils and organizations such as The Robert McLaughlin Gallery and Station Gallery in Whitby to support and aspiring and established artists from all around Durham Region.  Not only do they host art shows but also provide diverse art educational programming to use art as a medium to promote mental health awareness. There’s so many things going on at Ontario Shores, it’s worth checking our their Community events.

Durham Theatre Festival – April 11-21

April 13th, 2012 by My Durham Desktop

We might have missed the opening celebration, yet there’s still plenty of time to celebrate Durham Region’s dramatic side.  The 3rd Annual Durham Theatre Festival showcases every aspect of theatre—venues, theatre groups, actors, writers, producers and provides newcomers with the opportunity to feature their talents.

Last year over 3,000 people attended, and new this year is Durham Improv, a Teen Improv Challenge April 21 in Port Perry, as well as a Songwriters Music Festival at the St. Francis Centre in Ajax on April 14.

The play’s the thing!

June 19th, 2011 by My Durham Desktop

The Driftwood Theatre Group is a magical outdoor theatre tradition.  Driftwood celebrates the work of William Shakespeare through its annual Bard’s Bus Tour, performing at parks and heritage sites.   This year they’re featuring the bewitching ”Macbeth”.   The bloody tale of a ruthless and ambitious Scottish soldier who seizes power with the help of his ambitious wife and a trio of witches.  ”Double, double, toil and trouble; fire burn and cauldron bubble”.

The Festival of Authors – April 30th

April 25th, 2011 by My Durham Desktop

Perhaps this is what happens when you read too many disjointed sentences!  “Separation Anxiety”  by Norma Thomas was photographed in Port Perry.

If you want to get off the couch and mingle with the “literati”, you should attend the Festival of Authors, a Saturday night celebration at The Ontario Writers’ Conference with author readings, an opportunity to meet Canadian authors and tantalizing food with a cafe vibe.

Ontario Philharmonic at the Regent

February 15th, 2011 by My Durham Desktop

The Ontario Philharmonic has a beautiful new home in the recently restored Regent Theatre, thanks to UOIT’s purchase and renovation of Oshawa’s Regent Theatre in 2009, part of the university’s expansion into the downtown core.

I enjoyed the Toronto Welsh Choir there back in the fall, the accoustics were tremendous.  So I’m relishing the upcoming Ontario Philharmonic’s presentation of “Let’s Tango” on March 25.

What’s more, Durham Tourism, Durham Community Foundation and the Ontario Philharmonic are organizing a VIP Pre-Concert Reception to launch the Art of Transition Culture Fund, featuring fine wines, local art, and fabulous hors d’oeuvres.

“Winter’s Blast” by George Forgie might be motivation to stay inside in the warm.  On the other hand, original visual art like this is there to enjoy in the Old Pickering Village in Ajax at Cultural Expressions Gallery, and perhaps transport us to warmer climates!  Owner Esther Forde aims to expand our creative consciousness to many cultures and ethnicities.  To that end the gallery represents artists from five continents and over twelve countries – including Canada – through a diverse collection of paintings, sculpture and jewellery.

Heritage Days in Uxbridge (August 28 & 29)

August 22nd, 2010 by My Durham Desktop

One of Heritage Days’ main attractions at the Uxbridge Historical Centre is the 1812 Village and War of 1812 re-enactment group.  A history lesson comes to life about a war where the British army had only about 4,450 soldiers to defend 1,000 miles of border.

A theme of this year’s event is Made by Hand: Past and Present showcasing various works including a photography exhibit of wooden barns, model ships and museum artifacts such as hair wreaths, crocheting, wood carvings and other folk art.

“There will be something for everyone” said Carol Johnson, president of the Uxbridge-Scott Historical Society. “One lady is even bringing a crocheted table cloth that was made in the late 1800s by family members as they were sailing to Canada from Scotland.”

In addition to folk art, Ms. Johnson said the event will include demonstrations of antique farm equipment and steam, gas and oil engines and the miniature railroad is returning to the schoolhouse.

There will also be live entertainment, food vendors and plenty of games and crafts for children during the two-day event.
