Ontario Family Fishing Week – July 7 to 15

+1Share on TwitterShare on LinkedInPin it on Pinterest

Fishing usually requires some planning, with the first step the purchase of a fishing licence.  Ontario Family Fishing Week is an effort to make it easy to be spontaneous and try out this hobby for the first time. . or the first time in a long time!  One local event that takes advantage of this freedom from red tape is at Camp Samac in Oshawa on July 15.  Their Catch and Release Fishing Derby is a fundraising event to help support activities for youth at Camp Samac and you don’t even need fishing gear because it’s available for loan, how easy is that!

The Sea Shanty Collection at Oshawa Community Museum

As early as 1804, the harbour in Oshawa, then simply a natural bay, was described as having water deep enough to carry large-sized vessels.  Lumber was floated in rafts down Oshawa Creek to the Bay and loaded on vessels board for the U.S.  It was about 1840 when Oshawa harbour started to be developed by Thomas Henry.  The Henry House is now the home of Oshawa Community Museum and fittingly a new exhibit opens on May 18 exploring the ships of Oshawa and the men that sailed them.

Ontario Philharmonic at the Regent

+1Share on TwitterShare on LinkedInPin it on Pinterest

The Ontario Philharmonic has a beautiful new home in the recently restored Regent Theatre, thanks to UOIT’s purchase and renovation of Oshawa’s Regent Theatre in 2009, part of the university’s expansion into the downtown core.

I enjoyed the Toronto Welsh Choir there back in the fall, the accoustics were tremendous.  So I’m relishing the upcoming Ontario Philharmonic’s presentation of “Let’s Tango” on March 25.

What’s more, Durham Tourism, Durham Community Foundation and the Ontario Philharmonic are organizing a VIP Pre-Concert Reception to launch the Art of Transition Culture Fund, featuring fine wines, local art, and fabulous hors d’oeuvres.

Group of Seven: beyond landscape

+1Share on TwitterShare on LinkedInPin it on Pinterest

May brings an exciting new exhibit to the Robert McLaughlin Gallery in Oshawa. Drawn from the gallery’s extensive Canadian collection, Symphonious Realm: Celebrating the 90th Anniversary of the Group of Seven, commemorates the 90th anniversary of the group’s first exhibition. Although we tend to think of the Group as Canadian landscape painters, curator Alyssia Nelson has created an exhibit that shows a much broader range. Portraits, First World War scene, cartoons and even nudes show a much broader side to the early 20th century artists who forged an Canadian art identity. Music by the Rheostatics completes the Canadiana. The exhibit runs until August 26.
